Digi Choosday Project | Christmas In July with Polkadoodles: DIY Shaker Ornaments!

Soooo… I may have taken on even more projects for Polkadoodles, and I'm happy! Especially because today I get to share my first “extra” make—just in time for Christmas in July!

I finally made something I’ve been meaning to create for years now: personalized shaker Christmas ornaments for me and my husband! These have been on my craft wishlist since before I even owned a Cricut. I’d see them being sold online and tell myself, “I’ll make one soon!” But by the time the BER months arrive, life gets busy and we’re usually off to Manila for the holidays—leaving little room to craft for Christmas.

So I’m glad I got a head start this July! I made our shaker ornaments using the Pretty Poinsettia digistamp from Polkadoodles. I just really like this one—it’s simple, elegant, and comes with both a colored and black & white version. And right now, it’s on sale for less than a pound, so grab it while you can! It’s such a great deal and perfect for all kinds of Christmas crafts.

What I Used:

• Cricut Maker

• Mirror Cardstock (gold & red)

• Polkadoodles’ Pretty Poinsettia Digistamp

• Acetate sheets

• 200gsm plain white cardstock

• Shaker bits

• Bearly Art Glue

• Ribbons

Instructions

I’ll be sharing the Cricut Design Space project link here (click Customize when it opens). Just a heads-up: the Poinsettia won’t appear in the project file itself, because Design Space restricts non-DS uploads from being shared. But don’t worry—I’ll walk you through how to add it, or any digistamp you want.

How to Add the Digistamp

1. In Design Space, click Upload > Upload Image > Browse and choose your Polkadoodles digistamp.

                                    

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

   
   

2. Follow the prompts: Continue > Apply & Continue > Flat Graphic > Continue > Upload.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

3. Resize and place it over the top ornament layer to see how it fits.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

4. With the digistamp selected, click Offset, adjust thickness, and hit Apply.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

5. Select the offset layer, change Operation (from Print then Cut) to Basic Cut, and color-match it with the top layer. 

   
   
   
   
   
   

6. Hide the digistamp temporarily.

   
   
   

7. Select the offset + top layer, then Combine > Weld.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

8. Unhide the digistamp and move it on top of the welded layer.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

If you’re using a DS image instead of a digistamp, just go to Images, pick your design, and start from step 3.

Personalizing with Names

Want to make it extra special? Add a name!

1. Click Text, type the name, and choose a script font for easy cutting.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

2. Position the name on the top layer, making sure the first and last letter touch the edges of the circle.

   
   
   

3. Select both the name and top layer, then Combine > Weld.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

4. Place the design above the top layer.

Cutting Tips

• I used 8 layers of 200gsm white cardstock for the middle layers (they’re hidden anyway, so use your stash - in my case, I have so much white cardstock!)

  
  
  

• Both the top and back layers are cut in mirror cardstock.

  
  
  
  
  
  

• The gray shape is cut from acetate.

  
  
  
  

You’ll get 4 ornaments layer per A4 sheet using this size.

Assembly Time

1. Glue the Poinsettia digistamp onto the front mirror layer.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   

2. Adhere this to the acetate layer.

3. Stack and glue all the white cardstock middle layers.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   

4. Attach the middle stack to the red mirror cardstock back.

   
   
   

5. Let dry completely.

6. Add shaker bits and glue on the front layer. Press with a book while drying so the glue seals well.

   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   

7. Don’t move it until fully dry to avoid shaker bits sticking to any gaps.
