Polkadoodles Digi Choosday: A Sweet & Snarky Halloween Card featuring Witch with Sunflower

Halloween projects aren’t usually the first thing I reach for (the Philippines and Saudi Arabia are not really that big on Halloween unlike other countries), but one thing I’ve grown to love about creating for Digi Choosday is how each challenge encourages me to dive into my craft stash and experiment with techniques I don’t always use. It’s such a fun excuse to play, learn, and create something a little different every time. And it's like a little practice too! Especially for my coloring.

For this week’s Digi Choosday Challenge, our Design Team prompt was Halloween, and we were asked to use any Halloween image from Polkadoodles. For this project, I chose the cute Witch with Sunflower digi stamp. She’s just the right amount of spooky and sweet, for me.

For my card, I decided to make my own brick wall background using a stencil and Distress Oxides, then turned it into a shaker card with a die-cut window. If you’ve been following me for a while, you probably already know that anything shaker is my favorite! It's just so fun and satisfying adding all those sparkly little shaker bits, and I absolutely love how this one turned out! To make this card even more versatile, I paired it with the sentiment “Better to be Real than Perfect” from the Rebel Messages with Attitude sentiment collection. Instead of being a card that’s only useful during Halloween, it can also be given any time of the year as a fun, slightly snarky encouragement card. I always love stretching my seasonal supplies a little further! Materials Used

• Sentiment - “Better to be Real than Perfect” from the Rebel Messages with Attitude collection
• Ohuhu Alcohol Markers
• White Cardstock
• Black Cardstock
• Tim Holtz Guillotine
• CutterPillar Crease Score Board
• Mama Elephant Blooming Window Window Die
• Shaker Bits
• Foam Tape
• Acetate
• Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue
• Scissors
• Distress Oxide Ink – Black Soot
• Blending Brush
• Brick Stencil
• Distress Spritz - Uncharted Mariner
• Distress Spritz - Weathered Wood
• Distress Oxide Spray - Hickory Smoke

Instructions

1. Prepare your card base by cutting white cardstock to 5.5” × 8.5”.

2. Score it in the middle at 4.25” on the long side and fold.

3. Cut another piece of white cardstock to 4" x 5.25".

4. Cut a piece of black cardstock to 4.25” × 5.5”.

5. Die-cut a window from another piece of black cardstock using the Mama Elephant Window Die.

6. Print and color the Witch with Sunflower digi stamp using Ohuhu Alcohol Markers.

7. Cut a piece of acetate to fit behind the window opening.

8. Adhere the acetate behind the die-cut window.

9. Cut a piece of white cardstock the same size as the window panel. Spray this white cardstock with Distress Spritz in Uncharted Mariner, Distress Spritz in Weathered Wood, and Distress Oxide Spray in Hickory Smoke. Allow it to dry completely.

10. Using the brick stencil, blend Black Soot Distress Oxide Ink onto the 4" x 5.25" white cardstock to create a brick wall background.

11. Mount the brick background onto the black cardstock panel.

12. Apply thin foam tape around the back of the acetate window, making sure it won’t be visible from the front.

13. Add your favorite shaker bits onto the sprayed cardstock.

14. Remove the backing from the foam tape and adhere the window over the shaker bits to seal everything inside.

15. Attach the completed shaker window to the brick wall background.

16. Add your colored witch and the “Better to be Real than Perfect” sentiment.

17. Finally, adhere the completed panel onto your card base.

I hope this project inspires you to pull out your stencils, inks, and shaker supplies and give them a play. Sometimes the best projects come from mixing different techniques together. And who says Halloween cards can’t be enjoyed long after October?
